Kiernan Family Wedding Design

During the summer of 2015, I created print designs for my sister Mary’s wedding to her husband, Greg. Right out of college, I used this opportunity to work with clients to design exactly what they were looking for, help them print it, and ensure that the finished product was exactly the look they wanted for their special day.

I was responsible for a full color (front and back) wedding invitation. We were lucky enough to find an artist who had created a watercolor piece that perfectly encapsulated the wedding’s beautiful setting on St. Charles Bay. Randy Steward was kind enough to allow us to purchase use of his watercolor for the front of the invitation design.

The colors centered around teal, with purples, greys, and white added to compliment the watercolor and design elements. For the back of the invitation, I created a hand-drawn hammock under a teal tree to frame the invitation details. My sister chose the font Sweetpea, a stylized cursive that matched the whimsy of the lakeside wedding, and we matched the classic serif font Bodoni XT with it as a secondary font.

Supplemental design materials for this wedding included an RSVP card, a wedding program, and personalized thank you cards with a matching envelope.

This project helped me to understand the importance of the relationship with the client. In order to be successful in designing for someone else’s event, you have to be able to listen to what the client’s needs and wants are and translate that into a dynamic design. This can become difficult when the client refuses to compromise, or listen to your design advice. Luckily, working with my sister on this project helped me to balance my client relationship without too many complications (we are sisters, after all).

Mary and Greg were happily married by the water in September of 2015, and were very pleased with the way the wedding designs came out.

“Sarah was professional, skilled, and imaginative to work with! She offered multiple designs and was engaged and responsive throughout the process. We were very pleased with the work she did for us and continue to receive positive feedback from friends and family on how everything turned out.” Mary Kiernan
